Gladys Varnell Johnson, 84, of East Ridge died on Sunday, January 9, 2005 in a local hospital.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, she was a seamstress for many years before retiring from The Vogue. She was the oldest member of the Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church having been a member for 74 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Effie Mae Varnell; her husband, Clarence E. Johnson; her son, James F. Johnson; her sister, Lorene Varnell, and daughter-in-law, Joann S. Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlene (Kenneth) Hixson; sons, Leslie, Wayne (Carol) and Craig (Debi) Johnson, all of Chattanooga; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. B.J. Hancock officiating.

Burial will be in Silverdale Cemetery with David Johnson, Phillip Johnson, Eddie McMahan, Joe Brown, Scott Johnson and Charles McMahan serving as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.
