Nursing Home Chaplain Jasper E. Johnson Dies

Jasper E. Johnson, the chaplain at the Hamilton County Nursing Home, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at his Soddy-Daisy home. He was 82.

Mr. Johnson was retired from Chattanooga Boiler and Tank Co. He was an elder of Mowbray Presbyterian Church for many years and was active in Mowbray community affairs.

Survivors include his wife, Viva Johnson; four daughters, Beth Mills, Jamestown, N.C., Charlotte Rhodes, Pensacola, Fla., Rhoda Sifri, Naperville, Ill., and Carol Ann Dolan, Chattanooga; a son, J.E. Johnson Jr., Soddy-Daisy; four brothers, Thomas Johnson, Morrison, Tenn., Arvin Johnson, Hixson, L.F. Johnson and Coy Johnson, both of Soddy-Daisy; three sisters, Myrtle Smith, Morrison, Ellen Guess, Signal Mountain, and Ina Ruth Carr, Soddy-Daisy; and six grandchildren.
The funeral was to be held today at 2 p.m. at Williamson and Sons Funeral Home, Soddy-Daisy, with the Rev. Arthur Hampson and the Rev. Louis Johnson officiating. Burial was to be in Varner Cemetery on Mowbray Mountain.

Viva Johnson, 88, of Soddy-Daisy died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at a local health care facility.

She was a member of Mowbray Presbyterian Church, its Phoebe Circle and the Quilting Group. She was a member of the Hamilton County Nursing Home Auxiliary for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Johnson; daughter, Carol Ann Dolan, and parents, Nathan and Martha Lewis.

She is survived by her daughters, Rhoda Sifri of Chicago, Ill., Charlotte Rhodes of Pensacola, Fla., Beth Mills of Jamestown, N.C.; son, J.E. Johnson Jr. of Soddy-Daisy, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Art Hampton officiating.

Interment will follow in Varner Cemetery on Mowbray Mountain.

Family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
