PINE MOUNTAIN - Newell W. Johnson, 84, died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Hospice LaGrange.

Mr. Johnson was born July 8, 1928, in Dunlap, Tenn., the son of Joe Clifford Johnson and Mary Ellen Wilson Johnson. He was a former Information Systems Manager for West Point Pepperell. Mr. Johnson attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and then joined the United States Air Force as a pilot. After his military service, he began his career in computer programming with The DuPont Co. He enjoyed flying gliders, his poker club and helping others with computer problems. He also spent many hours transporting cancer patients to their appointments. He and his wife, Melcena, also volunteered at the Pine Mountain Tourism office. Mr. Johnson was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pine Mountain.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Melcena Johnson, of Pine Mountain; his daughter, Jenny Johnson, of Paris, France; his son, Bob Johnson of Knoxville; his step-daughter, Kim Chenoweth and her husband, Steve, of Highlands, N.C.; his stepson, Ed Cotter and his wife, Brenda, of Watkinsville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Andy Cotter, Clay Cotter, Hal Cotter, Katie Hawter, Matt Chenoweth, Julie Johnson, Brent Johnson; and one great-grandson, Jonathan Hawter.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Johnson may be made to First United Methodist Church of Pine Mountain, P.O. Box 246, Pine Mountain, GA 31822.

Memorial services were 2 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at First United Methodist Church of Pine Mountain with the Rev. Martha Dye and Dr. Charles Gardner officiating.
