Bettye Jean Moore, 81, of Chattanooga, died on Monday, May 23, 2011.
She was a lifelong resident of the Silverdale Community. Bettye, a 1947 graduate of Tyner High School, received a degree in English from the University of Chattanooga in 1951.
Teaching in both the city and county school systems for 36 years, she touched the lives of many children. The majority of her teaching years were spent at Tyner Junior High School where she taught seventh and ninth grade English for 29 years. She was also the Honor Society sponsor there for several years and many will remember her appearances in the school's annual talent show.
She was a faithful lifelong member of the Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School secretary for 65 years, assistant treasurer for five years and taught or directed Bible School for 15 years. She served the church as representative to the Presbytery and was elected commissioner to the General Assembly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Frankie Moore and her brothers, Charlton and Frank Moore.
She is survived by her sister, Rose B. Moore; sister-in-law, Jane Moore; niece, Tammy (Brent) Burke; and great-nephews, Kevin (Autumn) Burke; and Kyler Burke and great-great-nephew, Evan Padgett.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga for the care they so competently and lovingly gave.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, at the Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Christian Smith and Rev. Olen "Bud" Russell officiating.
