Our joy was our love of each other
Designer & Builder of The Gingerbread House (back of headstone)
Obit:
Paul Haddock Varnell, 77, died on Wednesday April 29, 2009, at his home on Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
Born April 22, 1932 in Ooltewah, Tn., he lived most of his life in Chattanooga. A graduate of Belmont College in Nashville, music was one of his great loves. He was a dedicated Christian and Bible scholar, who served as teacher, lay minister and minister of music in a number of area churches. His beautiful tenor voice brought pleasure to all who heard it.
In addition, he was a master chef who studied at the Culinary Institute of America, as well as culinary schools in New Orleans and Atlanta. In recent years, he also pursued studies of Hebrew and Greek scripture.
Paul spent a lifetime in the construction trade, serving as project manager on many prestigious projects all over the Southeast, including the Sandestin Resort, Destin, Fl.; LSU football stadium, Baton Rouge, La.; Tampa Waste Water Treatment Plant, Tampa, Fl.; TVA Office Complex, Chattanooga Trade Center, and the new Electric Power Board to name a few.
He considered his home on Lookout Mountain (The Gingerbread House) to be his crowning achievement demonstrating his master design and craftsmanship. Built as a house of love, it was featured in local newspapers on several occasions.
Paul was known for his outgoing friendliness and hospitality; and he enjoyed welcoming friends, family and strangers alike to his home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Deward and Ada Haddock Varnell, and sisters, Alene Johnson and Irene Jones, all of Ooltewah.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Peggie Leath Varnell; four sons, Dr. Hartly (Sharon) Varnell, Dee (Theresa) Varnell, and James (Jan) Sisk of Chattanooga; and Douglas Varnell, Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Kenneth Varnell, Ooltewah; sister, LaVerne Neal, Trenton, Ga.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
