CORPORAL US Army
Korea
July 9, 1932 - May 27, 2014
Obit:
Wendell Oliver Walker, age 81, of Soddy Daisy met his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Memorial Hospital. He was a devoted husband and father.
Wendell was an Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He retired from TVA’s Sequoyah Nuclear Plant after 23 years. He was retired from Labor’s Local 846 and was of the Church of God faith.
He was a loyal Detroit Tigers baseball fan since a young man, loved raising chickens, and entertained his family, friends and neighbors with his singing and whistling.
Wendell was born on July 9, 1932, and was the youngest and sole surviving member of the George and Lizzie Walker family. He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters, three nephews and best friend Wallace H. Barker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Thelma Penney Walker; his son, Wendell Scott; and daughters, Penny and Karen; all of Soddy Daisy. His is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and nephews, a step-brother, Casto Smith, and a multitude of friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home and the funeral service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Melvin Walker officiating. Burial will be at East Soddy Community Cemetery with Rev. Rick Smith officiating. Pallbearers will be nephews Glenn Walker, Paul Flaherty, Larry Walker, Leland Walker, Ronnie Walker, Kenny Walker, and Dennis Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be his good friends Walt Davis, Jack Gregory and Wilburn Walker.
The family would like to thank Drs. Kirk Wilcox and Eric Conn, who took such good care of Wendell for so many years; Dr. David Dodson who made it possible for the family to stay with him during his final days; and Dr. Bryan Johnson who helped with the transition to his Heavenly life. Thanks are given to the nursing staff at Memorial Hixson – especially Cindy. Also, the family is so grateful for the nurses and CNAs in the oncology wing at the main campus – especially Mike and Ruth. Additionally, the family appreciates all the prayers, visits, calls, text messages, and offers of help they received from so many friends – the love and support were felt daily.
Finally a very special heart-felt thank you to the family’s special angel Ashley, his great-niece, for the late night visits in the MICU waiting room. She was a ray of sunshine to some very dark days.
Wendell will be greatly missed, not only by his family, but by all his friends as well. He loved life and enjoyed every day to its fullest. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.williamsonandsons.com
