John B (Overview) FARMER

Martin Family Cemetery
Weakley County,
Tennessee

VETERAN
PRIVATE Company H
7 Tennessee Cavalry Regiment
Civil War Confederate
August 31, 1828 - October 15, 1908

John B. Farmer was the eldest son of John F. and Elizabeth Farmer and grandson of Thomas and Drucilla Martin. John B. Farmer never married. The Weakley County, Tennessee 1880 census confirms this by listing him as single. It does suggest a discrepancy about his age. The transcriber of the census showed his age as 32 in 1880. It also lists his place of birth as Virginia. The estimate of circa 1838 is the era when his parents migrated to Tennessee from Virginia. This would support the 1828 birth date and suggests that his age was probably 52 in 1880, not 32. The age could have been misread by the census transcriber. The tombstone inscription also shows his date of birth to be 31 Aug 1828.

The 1870 census shows John B. living in his father's household. The 1880 census shows him living at the John K. Vaughn household as a farm laborer. The 1900 census shows him living with his brother, Rick.

The Friday, March 13, 1903 Dresden Enterprise newpaper reported "Uncle John Farmer, of Shady Grove, stayed with N. R. Vaughn Monday night."

The October 23, 1908 Dresden news reported his death as 81 years old, and ex-confederate soldier, on visit from the soldier's home in Nashville. John had served as a private in Company H, 7th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate States of America.
