Obituary for Kate Massengill
Kate Massengill, age 91, 590 Mountain View Rd., Bluff City, went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 5, 2007 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. She was a native of Damascus, VA but had lived in Sullivan County most of her life. Mrs. Massengill was a daughter of the late John William and Minnie Jeanette Trent Lethcoe. She was a member of Mountain View Church of Christ. Mrs. Massengill retired from Imperial Reading Company. She was also a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, cooking and canning and frequently shared her garden with her friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Massengill was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Massengill, two sons, Fred Massengill, Pete Massengill, one daughter, Blanche Atkins, and one granddaughter, Kim Kiser.
Survivors are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirley Massengill Curtis Proffitt, Bluff City, Cathy and Charles Reedy, Easley, SC, Faye and Raymond Berry, Johnson City, one son and daughter-in-law, Dean "Rusty" and Jane Massengill, Bluff City, seventeen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, Shirley Massengill, Piney Flats, Nell Massengill, Jonesborough and special niece, Carolyn Poe, Bristol, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Massengill will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Mr. Wayne Boswell and Mr. Milton Mathers, Ministers officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel prior to the service. Friends may also call at the home of her daughter, Shirley Proffitt, 637 Mountain View Rd., Bluff City at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8 in Sunrise Cemetery, Bluff City. Everyone is welcome to meet the family at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bill Rhea, Benny Massengill, Ronnie Massengill, Lewis Blevins, Harold Manis and James Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Mountain View Church of Christ, Earl Ellis and Elby Stanley.
A special "thank you" is extended from the family to Dr. Peter Tuberty, Dr. Claire Paris, Jessica Stanley, PA and all the staff at Sycamore Shoals Hospital and third floor and the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for the care given to Mrs. Massengill during her illness.
