Mary Bottoms Gardenhire is now buried in an unmarked grave.
The source of this information is, "James County: A Lost County of Tennessee, Old James County Chapter East Tennessee Historical Society, Ooltewah, (Hamilton Co), Tennessee, Pages 102 & 103." It states, "The Salem Baptist Church was organized in the Gardenhire Community on the fourth Saturday in May 1835...The first church house was built of logs on two acres of land on the George Gardenhire farm...The land was on a hill above the Gardenhire Spring later known as the Eldridge Spring. Little is known of this church, because it burned, along with all the church records, some time before 1857...While the church was located here, a cemetery known as the Gardenhire Cemetery, was established about one mile southwest of the church where many early settlers in the community were buried...The tall, white marble monuments to George Gardenhire and wife, Mary "Polly" Bottoms Gardenhire, ...impressed her by their large size and white color. Thirty-nine graves were in the cemetery, but not a single monument is left today.
