Elizabeth Smotherman, who taught at Red Bank Elementary School for more than 38 years, died Sunday, July 16, 1995, in a local hospital. Mrs. Smotherman was a charter member of Red Bank United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school there for many years. She was a member of the Margaret Helms Sunday School Class and had served as president of the Wesleyan Service Guild. She was the first president of the Chattanooga Area Library Association. Mrs. Smotherman, a resident of Red Bank, held a bachelor's degree from the University of Chattanooga and attended graduate school at UT-Knoxville. She was a member of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Retired Teachers Association, NAARP, Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, the Retired Teachers of Red Bank Elementary, Red Bank Senior Citizens, Red Bank Baptist Senior Adults and Friends of the Library. She was a member of the Daytonia Garden Club, where she had been historian chairman and was involved with the Mini Park Project for many years. She was a member of American Childhood Education International, where she served as president and vice president and was a delegate to Buffalo, N.Y. Mrs. Smotherman was a life member of Alpha Delta Kappa, where she served as chaplain, Ways & Means chairman, Courtesy Committee chairman and was a life member of Silver Sister. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota Epsilon Conclave, where she served as treasurer for two years.
She was a daughter of the late Luther Thomas and Leafa Lea Sliger.

Survivors include a daughter, Anne Elizabeth "Betsy" Haskell, Douglasville, Ga.; son, Mac Smotherman, Chattanooga; sister, Betty Coffey, Huntsville, Ala.; two grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Baker officiating. Burial will be in Red Bank Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home
