(Danny Ralph Penney) passed away peacefully on March 14, 2019 at the Soddy Daisy Life Care Center.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Ruby Reno Penney, brother R.L. Penney, Jr., sister Carolyn Hixson, grandson Sean Payton Higgins.

Dan was a 1960 graduate of Soddy Daisy High School and proudly served on the class reunion committee. He remained close to many of his classmates and treasured each friendship.

Dan was a Navy Veteran serving mainly in Japan on the USS Tom Green Co, LST.

Dan was retired from the EPB of Chattanooga after 38 years of service. He considered the men and women he worked with as being a life-long brotherhood.

Working with Gerald Grandfield they were the originators of the Choo Choo BBQ. He established Penny’s Pit BBQ and was well known throughout the area for his award and trophy winning BBQ.

Dan is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margie Smith Penny, daughter Cristal (Jim) Higgins, granddaughters Kalyn and Kena Higgins, nephew Coy Hixson. Pawpaw Penny had many honorary grandchildren, nieces and nephews AND special friends too numerous to mention. Dan was a kind and generous man who touched many, many lives. He will be missed.

The visitation will be from 3:00PM to 6:00PM on Friday, March 22, 2019 with funeral services to follow, conducted by Bishop Jackie L. Penney at East Daisy Church of God, corner of Green Pond and Sequoyah Roads.

Internment will be held privately at a later date at Wilcoxen Cemetery.
