George Frederick Talley was born on December 17, 1840 in North Carolina, and he was the son of Guilford Talley (1783–1858) and Nancy Parkinson "Ann" (Southerland) Talley (1800–1862).
He was married in Montgomery County, Tennessee on March 3, 1861 to Mary E Abernathy (1841–1916), the daughter of Col Gilbert Taylor Abernathy Sr (1820–1888) and his 2nd wife Emily Bevel (Talley) Abernathy (1835-1911).
