Mary Katherine Hughes Browning, 79, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 2, 2005.
She was born on Dec. 31, 1925, the daughter of the late Walter C. and Gertrude B. Hughes. She was a devoted wife and mother and a dedicated Christian. She was a member of Mile Straight Baptist Church.
She will be remembered most for her work as a missionary in Chile, South America, where she worked along side her husband for over 39 years. Together they raised four of their children on the mission field and helped build several churches for the natives of that country. She also accompanied her husband on his travels throughout the eastern states during their ministry.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Veronica Browning; brothers, Bill and Foster Vance Hughes.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lewis E. Browning; daughters, Glenda and Jim Thorn of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Bettie Ann Sand of Soddy-Daisy, Patricia Browning of Fort Campbell, Ky.; sons, David and Tammy Browning of Pikeville, Tenn., Richard Browning of Dunlap, Tenn.; brother, Gid Hughes of Soddy-Daisy; sisters, Lennie Heard, Marie Stuart and Jessie Odom, all of Soddy-Daisy, Bertie Weathers of St. Cloud, Fla., Shirley Williams of Sale Creek; aunt, Viola Burton of Sale Creek; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Al Goss and Dr. Ernest Gambrell officiating.
Interment will follow in Coleman Cemetery.
