Obituary:

On the afternoon of April 1st, 2022, Kenneth (Kenny) Ralph James ran shouting into glory.

Kenny was born on December 28th, 1947, to Ruth and Samual James. He loved, and was loved by many. Kenny grew up around the mountains of Soddy. He and his 6 siblings were bonded by blood, but also by experiences shared.

He met his diamond, his wife, Charlotte Fredrick James, square dancing in Dunlap,TN. Their love story started there but continued for 54 wonderful years. They made a life for themselves in Soddy Daisy with their most prized possession, their daughter, Renee. Kenny was a tradesman of sorts, an iron worker and a painter. His real work was small engines. He loved to take apart any old machine, but what he treasured most were the people that brought him their belongings. Over the years, people would bring him their troubled items to be worked on, and when the bill came he would charge pennies or nothing at all. He’s remembered for his goodness.

In 1989, his first grandchild was born and reactively, there was a new role he then embodied with excitement and the utmost dedication. He became “Papaw”, a name his 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren would joyfully call him. For 32 years he poured his love and time into his grand babies. Having a house full of children brought him true happiness.

In his elder years, he and his dear wife explored, traveled, and intentionally lived seeking togetherness and moments of bliss. They regularly hit the road to go ride the train in Bryson City or eat at their favorite diner in Maggie Valley. They lived life in no hurry, cherishing simple moments.

Kenny is proceeded in death by his parents Samual and Ruth James and his siblings; Leroy James and Jeanine (Junior) Gann. He is survived by his beloved wife Charlotte James, daughter Renee (Jimmy) Cross, grandchildren; Lindsey (Jordan) Walker, Justin (Alyssa) Cross, Noah (Lindsey) Cross. His 6 great-grandchildren Knox, Adalynn, Charlotte, Hazel, Annie and Forrest. His siblings; brother Darrell (Gayle) James, sisters; Sheila Smith, Faye White, Dede Daughtry, Donna (Don) Clingan and many nieces and nephews.

The family wants to thank Pastor Calvin Nunley for years of mentorship and clear guidance in Kenny’s walk of faith. The family also sends their gratitude to the wonderful nursing staff and doctors at Memorial Northpark floors 2 and 3. Visitation will be held 4pm-8pm Monday April 4th at Williamson and Sons Funeral Home.  The service will be held in the chapel Tuesday April 5th at 2pm with Calvin Nunley officiating, the graveside service will follow immediately afterwards. Pallbearers include: Rick Williams, Steve Gann, Derrick Cookston, Raymond Gann, Ryan Scafe, and Chad White.
