Nancy Bell Hart Newman, 99, the last member of the original Hixson family, founders of the town of Hixson, died on her birthday, Sunday morning, Sept. 6, 2009, after celebrating her birthday with her family and friends on Saturday.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Middle Valley and was preceded in death by her husbands, Roy Hart and Archie Newman; and daughter, Lou Clayton.
She had commented that in 99 years she had seen a lot of changes and remembered all of them. Of all the things that failed, her memory had not. She often delighted in delivering the details of her grandchildren's childhood highlights to their spouses. It gave great pleasure to have family around her, to cook for them, to console them in a time of need, to give advice in times of trouble, and most of all, love them when they needed it most.
She was a daughter of the earth, toiling daily to plant and tend to her garden which gave her the most comfort and pleasure. We will miss her, but knowing that she is where she wants to be makes us happy and that she is finally at peace. We love you, "Maw Maw."
Surviving family members include her sons, Leroy and Betty Hart, Arthur and Naomi Hart; son-in-law, Charles Clayton; and stepdaughter, Catherine Branham; grandchildren, Ronnie and Sherry Hart, Michael and Martha Hart, Charles Hart, Kim and David Allen, Ken and Vickie Clayton, Kathy and Gary Newby, Judy and Tim Wilson, Dale Hart, Douglas Hart, Tammy and Billy Lewis, Glenda and Allen Lewis, Kathryn and Brian Gillis; 23 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Darryl Duggar officiating. Interment will follow the service at Friendship Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, and 2-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the funeral home.
