Dorothy Pennybacker Vermillion, age 91, passed away Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn. Mrs. Vermillion was born in Franklin, W.Va., to the late Bess Landis Pennybacker and John Preston Pennybacker. There she was educated and attended the Franklin Presbyterian Church. She excelled in various activities and represented her school in May Court, forensics, and basketball activities at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va. She was a talented singer and often sang solo in church choir and school. She married the late Virginian, Champ Clark Vermillion in Bluefield, W.Va. Feb. 28, 1942. During World War II, she lived with his parents until her husband returned from a tour of Europe and Africa. Dorothy and Champ enjoyed a family of two children. In the role of Christian, wife, and mother, she dedicated her life. She participated in various activities in church and served in various offices of family owned and managed Southern Furniture Co. She especially enjoyed trips to the family farm, travels to Belgium and Holland, vacations in Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach and attending furniture markets in High Point and Hickory, N.C. Dorothy will be remembered as the classic Southern lady, a paragon of virtue, who was always there for her family. She was extraordinarily lovely, gracious, kind, charming, and patient, a true treasure. She was also bright, intuitive and had great inner strength. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, previously named. There were no living siblings. Her survivors include son, William Bernard "Bill" and wife, Suzanne Turner Vermillion; grandson, Jonathan Clark "Jon" and wife, Leslie Taylor Vermillion and great-grandsons, Cameron and Collin of Hendersonville, N.C. Her daughter is Ann Pennybacker "Penny" Vermillion Bruce husband, Robert Arthur Bruce; and granddaughter, Caroline Elizabeth Bruce of Bristol, Va. Several nieces and nephews with extended families complete her family lineage. A special thank you goes to Dr. Steven Hanor, Dr. Gregory Gerlock, BRMC second floor nursing staff, Wellmont Hospice House, and Dr. David Stancil of First Baptist Church, for their dedicated service to Mrs. Vermillion. The funeral services for Mrs. Vermillion will be Tuesday Oct. 18, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. David Stancil officiating. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. A private burial will be Wednesday at Shelby Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flower, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Bristol, 1 Virginia St., Bristol, VA 24201, or the American Heart Association , 4708 Papermill Dr., Knoxville, TN 37909.
