ROBERT EARL SCHWAM, 93, longtime member and Elder of Cordova Presbyterian Church, died March 17, 2007, at his home in Cordova. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Juanita Butler Schwam, and a son, Robert E. Schwam, Jr. A retired farmer, Mr. Schwam was born February 9, 1914, in Cordova, and he was continually active in many community affairs during his entire life. A current Director of the Shelby County Farm Bureau, he was honored in 1973 with the Leonard J. Kerr Award for Meritorious Service. Mr. Schwam also served as a Volunteer Leader of the West Tennessee 4H Club, President of the Cordova Bridle and Saddle Club, and President of the Cordova Cemetery Association. In 1985, working closely with many other Cordova residents, he was instrumental in establishing the Cordova Community Center by raising funds to purchase the old Cordova Elementary School from the Shelby County Board of Education. He leaves a sister, Ms. Margaret E. Schwam; a brother, Richard L. Schwam, both of Cordova, and four daughters, Mrs. Norma E. Miles of Germantown, Mrs. Gloria S. White of Lawrenceville, GA, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Tracey of Mesquite, TX and Mrs. Marilou Smith of Cordova; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation was Monday, March 19, from 5-8 p.m.at Memphis Funeral Home Germantown Chapel. Services at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, Cordova Presbyterian Church.
