Civil War Confederate
1812 - 1876
Major Thomas Sandusky Gorman was the son of John Gorman II and Mary Sandudsky. When Major Sandusky died his body was laid to rest in the Old Presbyterian Cemetery. In 1915, a few citizens, with the help of the Southern Railway and the Masonic Lodge, collected enough money to erect a monument to the memory of Major Thomas Sandusky Gorman in Union Cemetery, where his remains had been placed by order of the County Court, after thirty seven years in a neglected spot.
The Newport Post Office was originally know as Gorman's Depot, a name honoring Major Thomas Sandusky, one of the town's most prominent citizens.
