William Martin and Sarah Glass/Martin came to Weakley County in 1832 with her parents Dudley Glass Sr. and Nancy Carr/Glass. Initially, William Martin settled on land northwest of Dresden. He cleared the land and raised the first crop of tobacco in the county. Five years later his parents, Thomas Martin and Drucilla Vawter Martin arrived. William Martin then moved his family one and one-half miles northeast of the center of an area that eventually became the city known as Martin. His tract of land was 2500 acres. Their home was built on high ground located just north of the present East Side Cemetery in Martin. Here, William and Sara Glass Martin raised nine children. Three of their sons, George Washington Martin, Thomas Dudley Martin, and Marshall Presley Martin were instrumental in developing the city of Martin.
