Lt.Col. Frank Adkins volunteered for the Army Air Corp in Nov. 1940. After the Pearl Harbor attack, he was shot down in the Battle of Java. After evading capture, he downed 3 enemy planes in New Guinea. He was awarded the Silver Star, Dist. Flying Cross, & Dist. Service Cross by Gen McArthur. He was the Commanding Officer of the 50's, 313 Fighter Squadron in P-47's. He achieved ace status on Aug. 26, 1944, when he downed two German Bf-109's near Elbauf at 1445 hours. Lt. Col. Adkins died while piloting a P-38L (44-25844) on a training mission 14 miles SW of Freeport, Texas on Feb 23, 1945.
