James Oliver Adkerson Sr., 77, of Hixson, passed away Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005, at home after a lengthy illness.

Jim was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tenn., and was well known for his recitations of "The Master's Hand" and others. He was inducted into the Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame and was retired from Carpenters Union Local 74.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Oliver Adkerson Jr.; sister, Mary Elizabeth Phillips; brother, Dr. Samuel Dayton Adkerson; mother, Dr. Pauline Hale Adkerson; and father, James Lindsey Adkerson.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Miller Adkerson; daughter, Connie Adkerson Parsley, of Hixson; son, Stan Adkerson, of Atlanta; grandson, Steven Harvey, of Red Bank; brother, Herman Hale Adkerson, Golconda, Ill.; sister, Martha Alice Chavez, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in the chapel of funeral home with the Rev. Mike Combs officiating.

Interment will follow in Friendship Cemetery.

Family will receive friends 5-9 p.m. today at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, Soddy-Daisy, (423) 332-1515.
