Per his obit:
He was an confederate veteran.
"After a short and impressive funeral service at the residence of the deceased, he was buried by the J. W. Gillespie camp of ex-confederates, in the City cemetery, the following ex-confederates acting as pallbearers: V.C. Allen, J.L. Henry, T.J. Gillespie, W.N. Ganraway, J.M. Jewel, A. Johnson."
