Tom was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Thomas Miles, Sr. and Edna Mae Cox. While attending university, he met and married Betty Elizabeth Baker (a.k.a. Lauren Baker). In love and with a child on the way, they were married in 1962. The couple decided the military might be the right choice for Tom and he served in the U.S. Air Force for 2 years. After an honorable discharge, he re-enlisted - this time in the U.S. Army - where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded several medals including 2 bronze stars and retired as a Major.
After 3 children and 18 years of marriage, the couple divorced. Tom was devastated and remained infatuated with Betsy which he often conveyed to their daughter. He passed away from lung cancer at the age of 79, stating well in advance that he wanted it to be his last Christmas. Tom will be remembered for his service to his country, his intellect, sharp wit, and storytelling. He is survived by his first wife and their children.
