James William "Bill" Walker, 74, died Friday, February 6, 2009, at Ave Maria Nursing Home in Bartlett, Tennessee. Born in what is now referred to as Old Cordova, Bill attended Cordova Elementary School and Germantown High School. He graduated from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) and later served in the United States Army. After the army, he moved to northern Virginia, near Washington, D.C., where he taught English Literature for thirty years and influenced thousands of students. He was a patron of the arts, loved to travel, and was an expert on William Faulkner. He returned to Memphis in 2005 and was amazed at the changes he saw, particularly in Cordova. He enjoyed very much seeing many of his family members and friends upon his return. Bill had lived at Ave Maria for the past three years, where he was known by everyone and received wonderful care. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lynn Walker, and by his brother, Frank. He is survived by his sisters, Barbara McKenney of Bartlett, and Margaret Lynn Caswell of Cordova, a brother, Charles Chuck Walker of Memphis, a brother-in-law, Ed McKenney of Bartlett, a sister-in-law, Kathy Walker of Cleveland, Tennessee, an aunt, Margaret Bazemore of Vero Beach, Florida, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, including Ryan McKenney of Bartlett, with whom he was especially close. Bill had a unique sense of humor and loved to debate politics. He will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held at Cordova Cemetery on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Friends may sign the on-line guest book at commercialappeal.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donation be made to the Ave Maria Foundation. Family Funeral Care (901)761-8000
