Samuel BOND

Bartlett - Ellendale (aka Warren Chapel Pisgah) Cemetery
Shelby County,
Tennessee

Dec 19, 1804 - Aug 8, 1862

Physician, Tennessee Legislator and Cotton Planter. He was born in Knox County and lived in Alabama prior to moving to Shelby County in 1831. Bond had a lot of interests which included studying medicine at Cumberland University and practicing for a brief time. Later he became interested in politics for a brief while and even served a term in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1847-1849 but his real bread and butter came from cotton. In 1851 he went to London and entered hi cotton in the Crystal Palace Exhibition winning a medal. His wealth increased during the 1850's, all due to cotton but cotton would also contribute to his downfall. He mortgaged his holdings in Shelby County to purchase another plantation in Louisiana. Conbine that with the Civil War and Bond found himself destitute when he died. His fabulous 1840's mansion "Cedar Hall" originally called "The Avenue" still stands today about a mile from where he is buried. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
