Loy C. Cates, 85, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2013. He was retired from South Central Bell where he started working when he was 17. Loy began his career in the assignment office, moved up to climbing telephone poles, then engineering, and ultimately became the plant manager over all the business in Memphis. When he retired he had time for his passions, golf and travel. He and his wife, Betty bought an RV and traveled all over the United States and Canada, then travelled all over Europe by train. Throughout his life, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was an active participant and influence in their lives, inspiring them with his desire to help others, his honorability, hard work and strong Christian faith. All are infected with his travel bug and work ethic, but alas, no real golfers yet. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Betty Cates, his children Michael Cates (Angela), Mark Cates, Susan Goodman, Dennis Cates, seven grand children Justin, Taylor (Bailee), David, Brooke, Joseph, Christopher, Sarah and two great grandchildren Carter and Ashlyn. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m., until service time at 2 p.m., on Sunday, November 24, 2013, at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Ave. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
