Munford (aka R H Munford) Cemetery
Tipton County,
Tennessee

Decoration Day
Established in 1853, Munford Cemetery was named in honor of Richard H. Munford who beautified the grounds. Beginning in 1865, citizens came here to place flowers on the graves of those who died during the Civil War. The annual ceremony has continued to the present and is known as "Decoration Day". A Covington newspaper announced in 1890: "Our good women have decked their graves for 25 years with flowers as regularly as springtime has come." Beginning in 1901, graves of the soldiers were marked respectively with Confederate and or Federal flags. Speakers have included U. S. Senator E. W. Carmack, Congressman Charles B. Simonton, and Brigadier General James N. Portis, U.S. A. F. in 1982. Those helping with the observances have included Baker Lemmon Chapter, #251, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), Joe Brown Bivouac Camp #1148, United Confederate Veterans (in uniform and firing a musket salute), Camp #257, Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), American Legion and Auxillary, Spanish American War Veterans, Boy and Girl Scouts, John T, Eckford of Maley Funeral Home, Ray Pinner Post #4840, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Ft. Wright Chapter #2506 UDC.
