Bobby Eugene MAYO

Ridgecrest Cemetery
Madison County,
Tennessee

February 5, 1938 - January 17, 2018

Bobby Mayo died peacefully at his home in Pinson on January 17th after a long illness. He was born February 5, 1938, and grew up and attended public schools in Bemis and Pinson. He was a loving husband, the father of four children, and a doting grandfather to ten.

He worked as a truck-driver hauling cotton and cottonseed from Bemis for J. O. Lowrance, as a house-parent at Youth Town, and at Porter-Cable until his retirement.

He was probably best known in the area as an accomplished musician, playing multiple instruments. He began playing the Rockabilly Highway as lead guitarist for Billy Wayne Rolison, recording an important rockabilly 45 with him in Jackson in 1959 on Hillcrest Records. Later, he moved to country and eventually bluegrass, leading and playing in a variety of bands, including Wilted Grass with his good friends Albert and Lila Hall and Sweetwater Bluegrass with his sons and friends John Koons and Raybon Moore. He was always at his best entertaining a crowd at the Jackson Plectral Society music festivals and the Golden Circle Opry in Malesus.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Ann Ballard Mayo; his children Bob Mayo (Teresa), James Mayo (Liz), Cathy Miles (Kurt), and David Mayo (Angela); his sister Jackie Patrick; his grandchildren Jonathan Moore, Brandon Mayo, Manuel Perez, David Mayo, Jr., Evan Mayo, Ethan Mayo, Abigail Moore, Briley Mayo, Ella Mayo, and Rowan Clayton; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father John Gilbert Mayo, his mother Lucille Briley Ward, his special aunt and uncle Ella Sue (Briley) and J. O. Lowrance, his in-laws Robert and Syble Plaxico, and a son, Robert Lowrance Mayo. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bobby’s memory to The Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, January 21, 2018 in the chapel of Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home. Visitation for Mr. Mayo will be held Saturday, January 20, 2018 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home.
