The son of William Simonton and Catherine Ferguson, Charles Bryson Simonton was born on September 8, 1838 in Tipton county, Tennessee. He was a graduate of Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina in 1859. He came home to Covington, Tennessee and married Mary A McDill. Their union was blessed with five children: Charles Pressley Simonton, Nannie May Simonton, Ella Simonton, Anna Simonton and Willam McDill Simonton. In 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private and served with the 9th Tennessee Infantry, company C. He was soon promoted to Second Lieutenant and finally attained the rank of Captain. On October 8, 1862 he was severely wounded at the battle of Perryville, Kentucky which ended his military career. Following his pursuits of education and the law, he was elected circuit court clerk. He was admitted to the bar in 1873 and practiced his profession in Covington, Tennessee. He had many interests, one being the editor of the Tipton Record newspaper. He was elected to the 46th and 47th Congress and served from 1879 to 1883. He served as U. S. District Attorney for the western district of Tennessee from 1895 to 1898. From 1892 to 1903 he was President of the Covington school board. He died at his home in Covington, Tennessee on June 10, 1911.
