July 21, 1843 - December 13, 1913
A Gallant Confederate Soldier
Participated in and captured at the battle of Ft. Donelson
When exchanged, he returned to the Army and engaged in the
One Hundred Days Battle from Dalton to Atlanta, GA
Marched with the Army to Tennessee,
and was in the battles of Franklin and Nashville.
In 1893, He established the "Confederate Veteran"
and owned and edited it until his death.
"On fame's eternal camping ground
His silent tent is spread,
And glory guards, in solemn round,
The bivouac of the dead."
