Joseph W. Smith, 67, of East Ridge, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Bartlebaugh, Tenn. He was a member of Bartlebaugh Baptist Church. He was a 1954 graduate of Tyner High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had retired from U.S. Pipe and Foundry after 21 years of service. He was a 45-year plus member of Masonic Lodge #755 F&AM of East Ridge.

He was senior warden of the Yo rk R i t e order. He was a member of the "Lost Chords" cancer support group, where he met new friends who gave each other support and hope.

He was an avid Tennessee Vols fan and Western novel reader. He was a frequent customer at Ryan's Steak House on Ringgold Road and the family wishes to extend "many thanks" to the management and friends there for all your kindness.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Smith; his mother, Trudy Mae Smith; sisters, Margaret Ann Smith, Phyllis Marshall; stepsisters, Frances Alexander, Martha Cox.

He was a loving dad and a proud grandpa.

Survivors include his daughter, Jean Walston; daughter, Marlene Smith; and son, Joe Smith Jr.; grandson, Daniel Walston; granddaughter, Elisha Smith; nephew, John Marshall; stepsister, Ann Pruitt; also several aunts; uncles; and cousins.

Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Billy Dean officiating.

Interment to follow in Bartlebaugh Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 1 p.m. until service time at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
