Gilbert William "Bill" Brooks, 57, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness with cancer.

Mr. Brooks, a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, was retired from DuPont as a Human Resources supervisor. He was a member of Bayside Baptist Church and was former ASA Youth Softball commissioner. He was also co-founder of Frost Cutlery Women's Collegiate Softball Tournament.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marion Brooks.

Survivors include his wife, Avis Y. Brooks; three daughters, Gina Brooks White and husband Barry of Tallahassee, Fla., Sharon Brooks Rymer and husband Rusty of Cleveland, Tenn., and Karen Brooks Payne and husband Charles of Nashville, Tenn.; his mother, Earleene Brooks Gill and husband Coy of Ooltewah; two sisters, Robbie Nutt of Knoxville, Tenn., and Kathryn Smith of Ooltewah.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert C. Stitts officiating.

Burial will be at Silverdale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4355 Highway 58, Suite 101, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
