John "Red" Ervin, 82, of Bristol, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Select Specialty Hospital. He was born in Dante, Virginia, a son of the late Willie Beldon "Bill" and Ollie Biggs Ervin. He was a graduate of Temple Hill High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp. He moved to Bristol in 1952 and retired from Raytheon Corp after 35 years of service. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, was a founding father of Avoca Little League, president of Bristol Pony League and a coach for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Rowlette Ervin, and a brother, Dennis Ervin.
Survivors include his daughters, Connie Ervin Whitaker and her husband Dr. Jack Whitaker of Jonesborough and Teresa Jean "Terry" Williams and her husband Robert of Bluff City; a son, Russell "Rusty" Ervin and his wife Pamela of Bristol; a brother, Billy Max Ervin of Springfield, Massachusetts; eleven grandchildren; one great grandchild; three nieces and one nephew.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 o'clock Sunday evening, July 31, 2005, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, August 1, 2005, in the Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery with Pastor Tom Quickel, Jr. officiating. Military rites will be presented by VFW Post 6975/Tennessee Army National Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jack Whitaker, Robert Williams, Max Ervin, Mike Damron, Rick Damron and Rodney Kaylor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Avoca Little League, c/o Rusty Ervin, 248 Whitney Lane, Bristol, TN 37620.
