William E. Hassinger, 96, OF 1732 Holston Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, March 11, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 14, 1905, in Forest County, Pa., a son of the late Luther and Letitsha Houghton Hassinger. His family moved to Konnarock, Va., where he grew up and loved to work in the woods with his father. The family moved to Bristol in 1929. Mr. Hassinger was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was an owner and president of the Hassinger Organization, which included Bristol Builders Supply Co. and Central Warehouse. He was a member of Edgemont Presbyterian Church, where he was chairman of the Board of Deacons for many years. He was a member of Bristol Host Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Murray Hassinger.

Mr. Hassinger is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Hassinger of Bristol, Tenn.; a son, William E. Hassinger Jr. of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Martin Hassinger of Bristol, Va.; two nieces, Carolina Hassinger Lindsey of Chapel Hill, NC, and Ann Hassinger Smith of Raleigh; six great-nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Martha Murray Burson Stephenson of Jonesborough, Tenn.; a dear friend, Jerry Stone of Bristol, Tenn.; and many caring and concerned caregivers.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at Edgemont Presbyterian Church with Rev. Larry Stallard officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
