The Rev. Charles William "Bill" Howell, 74, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee. He was born in Canton, Georgia, to Dr. Alfred W. and Mildred Bean Howell (now deceased). He was a graduate of Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina, and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary of Columbia, South Carolina. He was a Lutheran minister and served in parishes in Elberton, Georgia; Forest Park, Georgia; and Memphis, Tennessee. He moved to Bristol on July 7, 1970, and was the pastor of Redeemer-Oak Grove Lutheran Churches and pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church for 18 years. Following his retirement from active ministry, he worked for eight years with the Tennessee Area Agency on Aging as a case manager/supervisor for access, advocating for the homebound elderly. He made many contributions to the Bristol community, including volunteering at Bristol Regional Medical Center for the past several years.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Deanna Cowart Howell; two daughters, Heidi Davis and her husband, Roger, of High Point, North Carolina, and Rachel Lamdin and her husband, Robert, of Baltimore; grandchildren: Jeremy and Adrian Davis and Alyssa and Grace Lamdin; two brothers, Wayne Howell and his wife, Dolores, of Florence, South Carolina; and Robert Howell and his wife, Joan, of Cambridge, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tom Quickel, the Rev. Gary Chenoweth, and Bishop Jim Mauney officiating. The committal service and interment were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 24, in Glenwood Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were George Testerman, Wayne Burnette, Charles Castle, Ed Morgan, Ed Scarbrouth, and J. B. Shelton.
Honorary pallbearers were all Lutheran ministers of the Tri-Cities area.
