James (Jay) Nathan Hickman went to be with his heavenly Father on Sept. 3, 2009, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born June 15, 1925, in Sullivan County, Tenn., to the late George Washington Hickman and Delphia Mae Hite Hickman. Mr. Hickman was a charter member of Hickman Memorial Baptist Church, Blountville, Tenn., and attended when his health permitted. He was employed by Modern Bakery until its closing and retired from Sullivan County School Board and Tom Brooks Exxon. He also had been employed at J. P. Stevens for 13 years. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jonathan Dixon, the staff at Carise Hospice, Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center 4th floor staff and ICU and Kyla Hounshell at Advanced Home Care. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sisters, Marie Damron and an infant sister; granddaughter, Brandi Hickman Daniels; and son-in-law, Roger Myers. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lena Mae Light Hickman. Along with his wife, he is survived by daughter, Sandra McMurray Myers of Blountville, Tenn.; and sons, Larry Hickman of Dulles, Va., Jerry Hickman and wife Marlene of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mike Hickman of Cleveland, Va. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; sisters, Eleanor Booker of Blountville, Tenn., Bevelene McClain of Bristol, Tenn., Doris Whitaker and husband Ezra of Blountville, Tenn., and Janice Hobbs of Hiltons, Va.; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at East Lawn Funeral Home and at other hours at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel with Pastor Ronnie Horne, Pastor Dewey Shaffer, Pastor David Salley and Pastor Orville Dolen officiating. Entombment will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, in East Lawn Memorial Parks Mausoleum No. 2. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and granddaughter. Military graveside honors will be accorded by the American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 and Gate City Post No. 265 with members of the Tennessee Army National Guard.
