*Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John D. Henderson Sr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather on Thursday, March 10, 2016, in Memphis, Tennessee. Jay was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, the eleventh son of Jerry and Roxie Mae Henderson. As a young man, Jay developed a passion for music and the theater. He sang with numerous bands, most notably the True Tones, who garnered local and national success in the 1960s, including a No. 39 spot on the Billboard Top 100. Jay was an avid Lady Volunteers basketball fan, and his wardrobe contained a wide variety of Vols orange attire. He was well-known for his cooking and could often be found in the kitchen. Jay had an intuitive understanding and a heart of compassion for people, especially children, and loved telling jokes and sharing stories. Jay loved the Lord Jesus and enjoyed fellowshipping and praying with the saints. He trusted in the blood of Jesus of forgiveness, experienced the life-giving Spirit, and looked forward to the promise of resurrection in God’s eternal kingdom. His warmth, his wit, and his wisdom will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Beverley, of thirty-seven years; his daughter, Emily, and son-in-law, Joshua; his daughter, Martha; his son, John David Jr. and daughter-in-law, Tamsen; his daughter, Lydia and daughter-in-law, Megan; his daughter Julia; and his grandsons, Benjamin and William; his sisters, Virginia (Ginny) and Gail, and his brother, Donald. Services will be held on Saturday, March 12, at Bartlett Event Center at 7 pm.
