He was originally buried in Smith Cemetery (No. 1), located in Carter County on the left bank of the Watauga River, upstream from Dry Branch, about 400 feet southeast of Hwy 67, on top of a high brushy ridge on property purchased by the T.V.A. from Gean Campbell. Twenty-two of the 23 graves were removed to six reinterment cemeteries.
In the original Smith Cemetery, these people were buried together in a row: Mary Smith, Daniel Smith, Hyliah J Smith (daughter), J. Henderson Smith (son), Lawson W. Smith (son).
