William was the son of Travis and Rebecca Ashby who were among the earliest Ashby families to move from North Carolina to Tenn. William lived in Lincoln County, Tenn. on the Ashby homeplace on Gimlet creek. He enlisted in March 1862 in Company A, 23rd Tennessee Infantry Battalion. He died of fever 17 June 1862 in Okolona, Miss.
No marker was found for William and his burial here is based on family information of the Ashby family who still live on the property.
