*Obituary
Christian Advocate

Died at Sailor's Rest Furnace, Montgomery County, TN, on the 2nd of Decenber 1854 of typhoid fever, sister Elizabeth Ellen, wife of P.H. Matthews, and daughter of William and Susannah McNickle, formerly of Stewart County, TN. Aged about twenty-three years.

Sister Matthews embraced religion in the year 1846, and soon after became a member of the M.E. church, in which she lived a humble, pious and devoted member until death came as a messenger of peace, to bear her triumphantly away to the land of eternal felicity.

In the death of Sister Matthews, the church has lost one of its birghtest ornaments, and one of its most exempleary members and her disconsolated husband has lost a kind and affectionate wife and her children a loving and tender mother.

Sister Matthews bore her affliction with Christian patience and resignation; and when she became conviced that she must soon die, she requested that her friends should be assembled in the room and engage in prayer. She said that she wanted to be made shouting happy; and during the prayer meeting, she raised herself up, and praised God by clapping her hands, and no doubt felt that Jesus can make a dying bed feel soft as downy pillows are.

Previous to her last expiring moment, she called her affectionate husband to her bedside and told him that she was not going to die, but that she was going to sleep; that she soon expected to be shouting with the redeemed millions around the great white throne. She told him to raise up her children and try to teach them how to serve God, and meet her in heaven. She then calmly fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, and no doubt was escorted by the convoy of angels to the land of pure delight. 'Where sickness and sorrow, pain and death are felt and feared no more'

Elizabeth's husband died only four short years later in Ripley Co., MO. He remarried two years later to Lydia Leathers in Dickson Co. and had two more daughters. The cemetery where he was buried was destroyed when the land owner remove all the stones on his property. The children of Elizabeth and Perry went to the care of his brother, Robert Calvin Matthews who moved with them and his family to Izard Co., AR in 1860. None of Elizabeth's children lived to marry with the exception of the youngest son, Sidney C. Matthews, born in January of the year Elizabeth died. The two girls, Amelia Ellen and Catherine Clementine, died soon after going to AR in 1862. Amelia was 14 and Catherine was 12. William the only other son died in 1875 at the age of 23. Of Perry's two daughters from his second married, only Wilmoth Harvey survived to adulthood. She and her half brother, Sidney, finally met in old age at her home in TX.
