John was a Private in Revolutionary War, Virginia Line 7th Infantry. His 1st wife was Mary Hill Pettipool, 2nd wife Kiziah Chandler. He moved his family to Wilkes Co., NC abt. 1784 and then West to Warren Co., TN abt. 1820. His children by Mary Hill Pettipool were James & William. His children by Kiziah Chandler were: Born in VA Langston; born in NC; Richard, Mary, Benjamin, Elizabeth, John, Nancy, Rachel & Martha.

There are 3 markers for John. There is a Military marker that says:
"John Cunningham, Virginia, PVT BA REGT, Revolutionary War, Feb 10, 1748 - Dec 18, 1842". The third marker says: "Sacred to the memory of John Cunningham was born Feb 10 1747. Died Dec 18, 1842, Aged 24 Years 10 Months, 8 Days".
